- IL TUO PRIMO TATUAGGIO?

A 16 anni, a Genova…non mi ricordo, mi sembra che il primo fosse un veliero sulla spalla. Poi a Marsiglia in 15 giorni due : un drago e ………., tutta roba che non c’è più adesso…

- IMMAGINO…

- IL TUO PRIMO TATUAGGIO DA TATUATORE:

Il primo tatuaggio che mi hanno pagato, credo che sia stato il decimo che facevo, giustamente (–ride-), era un incisione rupestre degli antichi liguri…

- HAI IMPARATO DA QUALCUNO O SEI AUTODIDATTA?

Sono assolutamente autodidatta, non ho avuto la fortuna di avere un maestro se non dopo qualche anno, e anche lì non si trattava di un”vero” maestro, nel senso che ho “rubato” con l’occhio, guardando e cercando di carpire i “segreti” di chi mi tatuava.

- COME MAI I TATUAGGI DELLE ISOLE MARCHESI?

Inizialmente mi sono avvicinato per ragioni puramente “estetiche”, e poi perché le campiture di colore che hanno mi servivano per coprire i tatuaggi vecchi.

- TATUAGGIO IN ITALIA, PRESENTE E FUTURO.

La scena italiana si sta equiparando abbastanza a quella mondiale e statunitense in particolare, anche se siamo ancora abbastanza indietro, come professionalità, come modo di intendere il tatuaggio, come “arte” sulla pelle, come seria espressione artistica, qui invece è ancora visto molto come business, improntato sulla quantità piuttosto che sulla qualità.

- I TUOI TATUATORI PREFERITI, ITALIANI E NON?

In Italia non dico niente, perché non vorrei fare un torto a nessuno; negli USA direi Horitaka, che è anche un grande amico, Gary Kosmala, (che mi ha tatuato ed è anche il mio “maestro”) e più o meno tutti i tatuatori di San Francisco che fanno l’old school americana.

- CONSAPEVOLEZZA O MODA?

E’ abbastanza soggettivo, la maggior parte delle persone si avvicina al tatuaggio in una maniera direi “superficiale”, anche se la curiosità sta crescendo e la gente inizia a voler sapere che cosa porta addosso.

- LA PARTE CHE PREFERISCI DEL TUO LAVORO?

Mi piace tutto di questo lavoro, tanto da non considerarlo quasi neanche un lavoro, e se lo considerassi tale probabilmente non lo farei più con la stessa passione che ho adesso; per me tatuare non è lavorare, ma una sorta di divertimento!

- DA QUANTO TATUI?

Ho iniziato nel '95, ma nel primi due anni ho tatuato una decina di persone, quindi direi che tatuo “seriamente” dal '97.

- ARTISTI, TATUATORI O NO, CHE TI HANNO ISPIRATO?

Beh sicuramente Gary Kosmala mi ha influenzato molto, ma forse più che un artista mi ha influenzato l’ambiente in generale che ho trovato in California quando sono andato a farmi tatuare (ed imparare).

- IL TATUAGGIO TRA 10 ANNI...

Credo (e spero) che migliori come sta già facendo, quindi gente che sa cosa chiedere, lavori grossi…
Insomma secondo me siamo sulla strada giusta.

- TU TRA 10 ANNI? ANCORA A TATUARE?

Spero di sì, se ci sarà la stessa passione tatuerò, quando non ci sarà più non se avrò ancora voglia di fare questo “lavoro; purtroppo in passato ci sono stati tatuatori anche bravissimi che poi hanno mollato, nel tempo, regredendo invece che progredendo, ed è una fine che eviterei!

- COSA RAPPRESENTANO PER TE I TUOI TATUAGGI?

Ogni dettaglio di questi tatuaggi ha un significato, è la storia di una persona scritta addosso, come tutti i tatuaggi del Pacifico. La maggior parte sono simboli protettivi, simboli positivi comunque, quello che in fondo cercava (e cerca) la gente.

- TATUATORE PREFERITO E PERCHE’

Il mio tatuatore preferito è ancora Gary Kosmala, nonostante sia in semi-ritiro, e mi piace perché è un fanatico della precisione, e quando lavori sulla pelle di una persona devi fare così e soprattutto devi prenderti tutto il tempo che necessita un tatuaggio, non mi piacciono le cose fatte veloci!

- CHI TI PIACEREBBE TATUARE E COSA?

Mi piace tatuare la gente che tatuo adesso, sono abbastanza fortunato, ho una clientela molto affezionata…

- SIMBOLO, NOME, DISEGNO CHE NON TATUERESTI?

Sono abbastanza restio a tatuare il nome delle fidanzate…

- D'ACCORDISSIMO!

- CHE MACCHINE TI PIACE USARE E PERCHE’?

Premetto che è da quando ho iniziato che mi “scontro” con l'attrezzatura, quindi sono arrivato a farmi tutto da solo, partendo dagli aghi, alle barette che tengono gli aghi, per poi costruirmi le macchinette, mi piace sapere con cosa lavoro. La concezione delle mie macchinette è quella americana, non europea, quindi con bobine a 8 avvolgimenti, che reputo più che sufficienti, con molle fatte a mano, totalmente assemblate da me, con il vantaggio della possibilità di taratura precisa della macchina a seconda del lavoro da svolgere.

- COSA NON TI PIACE DEL BUSINESS DEL TATUAGGIO?

Non mi piace che che uno che esce dalla scuola d’arte e a cena con i genitori decide di aprire uno studio di tatuaggi; sono per la vecchia scuola, gavetta, pulire i cessi dello studio, i pavimenti e poi - solo dopo un bel po’ - tatuare.

- First tattoo you get:

At 16, in Genoa..don’t remember, maybe the very first was a ship on my shoulder. Then in Marseille 2 in 15 days, a dragon and another that i don’t remember. All stuff that is not here anymore..

- I see..

- First tattoo you did:

The first tattoo i get paid for (something like the 10th, rightly – laughs-) was a stone mark of the ancient popolation here in Liguria.

- How you’ve learned to tattoo?

I’m completely self teached, at the beginnings i missed that luck to have a master, that happened only years later and also in that case i wasn’t a real “apprentice”, and i “steal” with my eyes, looking at him trying to catch the “secrets” and the tricks of who was tattooing me,

- WHY MARQUESIAN?

For merely aestetic reasons, and because the large amount of black helped to cover old tattoos.
And then it starts the passion..

- TATTOO SCENE IN ITALY. PRESENT AND FUTURE.

Italian scene is getting closer to the world and the U.S. one, also if we’re still quite far as global professionality, as the way tattoo is intended, as art, as serious artistic expression. Here is still seen only as business, more built on quantity that quality.

- PREFERRED TATTOO ARTISTS, ITALIANS AND NOT?

I can’t say nothing on italians, i don’t want to be wrong with anybody.

In the U.S. i would say Horitaka, that is a friend, Gary Kosmala, (that tattooed my and is my “mentor”) and more or less all the artists in San Francisco that do the american “old school”.

- CONSCIOUSNESS OR FASHION?

Is quite subjective, most of the people step in tattoos in a “superficial” way, but interest is growing and people is starting to ask about the meaning of what they wear.

- BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

I really enjoy everything of it, and i still hardly look at this as a job, an probably this approach helped me to keep all my passion for it, tattoing for me is a kind of fun more than working.

- WHEN DID YOU START?

I did the very first tattoos in 95, but i can say i started in 97.

- Artists, who inspired you?

Well, surely Gary Kosmala have a deep influence on my work, but maybe more than one artist i was influenced by the environment and the spirit i found when i went to California to get tattoed (and to learn).

- Tattoo art in the next 10 years...

I believe (and hope) that keeps getting better as it’s doing, so people that knows what to ask, large works.. At the end i think we’re on the right way!

- You in the next 10 years? Still tattoing?

I hope! If i’ll have the same passion i’ll keep doing this job, when it will be over i don’t know…

Unfortunately in the past we had artists, also great artists, that started going back and not forward, and it's an end that i’ll gladly avoid that!

- What you tattoos means to you?

Every single detail in these tattoos has a meaning, is the story of a man written on himself, as all the tattoos from the Pacific area. Mostly are symbol of protection, anyway positive signs, what at the end everybody seeked (and still seek).

- Your preferred tattoo artist and why.

My Choice is Again Gary Kosmala, also if is semi-retired from tattoing.

I like him because is a fanatic of precision, and is the right way when you work on somebody’s skin. You have to take all the time a tattoo needs, i don’t like things made quickly and in hurry.

- Who and what would you like to tattoo?

Actually i’m pretty lucky, i like to tattoo my customers, they are very affezionati

- Symbol, name or design you’ll never do?

I’m quite against girlfriend’s name and stuff like that..

- I AGREE COMPLETELY!

- WHAT ABOUT THE EQUIMENT YOU USE?

From the beginning i “fought” with equipments, so eventually i do all by myself, from the needles, the of the needles, to the frames and the whole machine. I like to know the tools i use. The conception of my machines is more nort american than european, with 8 coils, that’s are enough, with hand made springs, completely assembled by me with the advantage of fine tuning of the machine the work to do. blate da me, con il vantaggio della possibilità di taratura precisa della macchina a seconda del lavoro da svolgere.

- what you dislike of tattoo business?

I don’t like that one after some school of arts having supper with his parents decide to open a studio. I’m for the old school way, starting from lower ranks, cleaning the studio’s bathroom, washing the floor and only after, but a long after, start tattoing!
